MEET THE TEAM AT

Genesis Functional Medicine

Dr. Worley founded Genesis Functional Medicine to restore patients to optimal health by identifying and treating what's driving their disease, not just managing symptoms. We partner with each patient to create individualized treatment plans using advanced diagnostic testing, pattern recognition, and careful investigation of internal and external factors—discovering what standard lab testing may miss.

Mac Worley, MD, DMD, IFMCP

Physician

C. MacDonald Worley, Jr. was raised in northwest Georgia and graduated from UGA in 1984 with a BS in Microbiology. A career in some type of surgery aligned well with his love for problem-solving, working with his hands, and serving others. He ultimately decided on oral & maxillofacial over orthopedic surgery. After earning a dental degree and completing surgical residency training at VCU/MCV, he stayed in Richmond to earn a medical degree as well. Following this he completed post-graduate training in general surgery and orthognathic surgery in Santa Barbara, followed by board certification in oral & maxillofacial surgery.

During his 30-year surgical practice, he cultivated a deep interest in holistic medicine. He repeatedly noticed that health-conscious patients healed more predictably with less pain and swelling. When his late wife developed cancer, he committed himself to prolonged research into integrative oncology and medical care in general. He would continue training in functional and alternative medicine, eventually investing hundreds of hours of study over several years. He holds the Functional Medicine Certified Professional – Medical™ credential issued by the International Board of Functional Medicine Certification™.

As both physician and husband/father, Dr. Worley has experienced firsthand the challenges and frustrations of conventional healthcare. This ultimately led him to transition from specialty surgery to meet the growing need for functional/integrative medicine physicians. He is committed to listening more than speaking, addressing root causes alongside symptoms, and serving as a trusted advocate for his patients.

He is happily married, a proud father & grandfather, and profoundly grateful for God’s providence and patience. Away from the office, he enjoys reading, hiking, and any/all communication with his children, especially sharing his Dad jokes.

Karyn Smydra, RN, BSN

Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC)

Karyn began her professional career as a NICU nurse after earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She loved the collaborative efforts of the medical team — everyone with distinct expertise, united by a common goal of helping the tiniest patients grow strong enough to go home.

Training became her passion, and she carried it into medical sales over the next 20 years — educating doctors, nurses, patients, and salespeople in physiology, disease states, and treatment, and empowering patients to become advocates for their own care.

Karyn was equally passionate about exercise and whole-food nutrition. She became a Group Fitness Instructor, teaching weight training and cycling; she thought she had mastered healthy living, until her son was born and she developed disabling insomnia.

She tracked her sleepless nights on a calendar and pinpointed the pattern to the weeks before her period. She consistently brought that data to the many physician appointments, only to be repeatedly diagnosed with Postpartum Depression and prescribed antidepressants or antipsychotics. After 18 months and numerous physicians, she finally found an OBGYN who recognized her progesterone deficiency and treated it appropriately. She was finally seen!

Thereafter, her life, health, and family flourished. Her husband’s assignment as a U.S. diplomat brought them to Kyiv (Ukraine), where Karyn served as Health and Wellness Coordinator at the United States Embassy — working with diplomats, their families, and Ukrainian counterparts.

When Covid arrived in 2020, Karyn saw clearly that individual health was a critical — yet largely ignored — factor in mortality and morbidity. She knew that daily habits shaped true health outcomes, and she wanted to help others see that too. That conviction led her to the Institute of Functional Medicine, where she became a Certified Functional Health Coach.

Karyn partners with patients the way she once needed someone to partner with her — with curiosity, persistence, and genuine investment in their story. She knows that lasting wellness is built one daily decision at a time.

Dr Worley provided a clear and thorough explanation of my symptoms

and discussed effective ways I can make changes.”
